Proteas are South Africa's most dramatic contribution to the Perth garden, producing the large, architectural flower heads in pink, red, cream, and white that are among the most spectacular in the plant world. In Perth's sandy, well-drained soils they perform strongly - our Mediterranean climate closely mirrors their Cape Fynbos origin. Full sun. Sandy, extremely well-drained soil. Phosphorus-free fertiliser only. No manure, no general fertilisers. Minimal watering once established. Excellent drainage is the most important factor. Prune lightly after flowering.
