Blood Orange

One of the most visually striking fruits you can grow, and a genuine conversation starter in any kitchen. Blood oranges develop their characteristic deep red flesh and burgundy-tinged skin when exposed to cool overnight temperatures - which Perth's winter nights reliably provide. The colour develops gradually through the season, intensifying as temperatures drop, so early-picked fruit has less red than fruit left on the tree into late winter. The flavour is sweeter and more complex than standard oranges, with berry-like undertones that vary in intensity from season to season. Outstanding for fresh juice, cocktails, and anything where the colour matters as much as the flavour. Full sun. Well-drained soil. Deep watering through summer to support next season's fruit. Feed with citrus fertiliser in spring and autumn.
